September 25, 2022 – From the Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy,

I hope this finds you well.

Last Saturday, September 17, we had a very nice celebration of our parish feast day! In the name of the staff, I thank ALL of you for making it happen.

The celebration began with the 5 pm Mass, where Father Jack Cryan, our pastor emeritus, presided. Father Jack was amazed at how wonderfully everyone participated in the liturgy. It was good to hear that. Having active, participating worshippers is a hallmark or trademark of Our Lady of Mercy. I totally agree with Father Jack’s observation. It does feel good to hear you all responding in prayer and song. I encourage you to continue doing that.

Last weekend, we were invited to take a closer look at how we are living our lives. We heard it in the gospel passage that asked us to consider whom are we serving. We also heard it in Father Jack’s homily where he reminded us about our parish mission, I even mentioned it here in my pastor’s column.

This weekend, our gospel passage is showing us what happens to us when we leave this life and go to the next. Will we end up in the kingdom of heaven with Lazarus or will we be rejected like the rich man? The choice is still there for us. It is all about how we live and put God’s word into action. With that in mind, I encourage you to strive for eternal life. We can do that by doing our part as good Christians.

Last Sunday, I went to every classroom where our faith formation program was taking place in order to say hi and welcome our children and catechists on their first day of class. In one of the classes, the children were talking about the golden rule: “Do to others what you want them to do to you!” When I heard that, I said: “Wow!” I told the kids: “Do that!”

We know that the golden rule is the best rule. It sums up our calling as Christians. We are to live up to God’s commandments to love Him and love our neighbors. It is so simple, yet, we need to be reminded of it from time to time. If we look around us, we see that unfortunately, there is a lot of hate and crime. Show love, be love to others, brothers and sisters! That is how we attain eternal life and join Lazarus in heaven.

I would like to close this by asking you to check out our parish events and activities in this bulletin. To name a few upcoming events: we have the San Lorenzo Ruiz feast celebration on Wednesday, September 28 and the Living Rosary on Saturday October 8.

Go to our parish website also, olmnj.org for further information about our parish. Our Digital Ministry is trying to improve and enhance our website.

Also, there is an insert in this bulletin with an update on Synod 2023. A copy of the whole Synod report submitted by the Archdiocese of Newark to Rome can be found by clicking the link on our parish website. You can check it out.
Thank you and God bless our parish.

Love,

Father Marty

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THE LORD

We continue to look for additional young people to join our altar server ministry here in the parish. We appreciate parents and other adults who encourage the young people in their lives to volunteer to fill this role at Mass.

Sign-up sheets are available in the vestibule of the church. You can submit the completed forms to the Parish Office or give them to Father Marty or Father Andrew. You can also sign up by using the QR Code found here.

If you have any questions, please speak to one of the priests. We will soon be posting a schedule for the training sessions for those who volunteer to become Altar Servers.
