May 15, 2022 – From the Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy,

Greetings in the Name of the Risen Christ!

In the gospel this weekend Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35).

Loving one another is not just a matter of thinking good thoughts about each other. We are to love one another not with empty words and fine speeches, but rather with our deeds and in truth.

God’s love for us is ultimately creative. That Divine Love called us into being and holds us in existence. Our love for one another should also be creative. It should make good things happen in our world and in the lives of others.

Just as God shared himself in creating us in his image and likeness and then gave his life to redeem us, so we too are being called to share ourselves. We need to learn how to be more joyfully generous with our “stuff” and with our very selves. This is the basis of all family life and the basis for what makes a just and truly great society.

What matters in God’s eyes is not how strong we are or how wealthy we become in this world—rather what matters to God is how we have grown to be more generous in loving others. May God bless you all!
