February 4, 2024 – From the Pastor Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy, hope this finds you well. Last Saturday, January 27, we had a very successful and spirit-filled Women’s Breakfast in our parish. It was attended by almost 90 women. Our guest speaker was Dr. Dianne Traflet, who is the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Administration and Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Using a monologue approach, Dr. Traflet did an excellent job in sharing the story of Saint Priscilla. Priscilla, a Roman-Jewish woman, was married to Aquila and both were tentmakers as was St. Paul. It was through Paul that they met Christ while in Corinth. The one and a half months that they stayed with Paul was a very fruitful and edifying time for all of them. They were able to learn a lot from each other and Priscilla and Aquila discovered their vocation. They became strong witnesses to Christ’s gospel and spread that knowledge to the people to whom they ministered. Their influence even continues to our time and throughout the world. The women were able to relate to Saint Priscilla in so many ways. They went home edified and happy after having listened to Dr. Traflet’s talk. Just sitting in, I felt blessed and spiritually renewed myself. I thank Dr. Traflet for saying “yes” to our invitation and for giving her time to be with us. It was a day filled with a great blessing! Thank you also to Jeng Villa for putting this event together and thanks to all those who helped. This past Sunday, I baptized two children: Penelope Rose Viado and Aena Naomi Yamat Abaya. In the name of parish, I congratulate them and their parents. Let us include these two families in our prayers that they will be able to do their best to help their newly baptized children grow in their Catholic faith and to love God and their brothers and sisters in Christ. Next Saturday and Sunday will be the weekend of the 2024 Annual Appeal. This is the time when the Archbishop asks all parishioners to support the various missions of the Archdiocese. We will be showing Cardinal Tobin’s appeal video and will ask you to consider helping the Archdiocese. The goal set for our parish is $42,123. You have been blessed with what you have because you have been generous. I trust that you will show that same generosity as you have in the past. With that, I thank you in advance in the name of the Archdiocese of Newark. In celebration of World Marriage Day, we will have a Couples Game night for married couples this coming Saturday. Please register to participate. There are posters with a QR code in the church and in this bulletin. Also, our Mardi Gras celebration before Ash Wednesday is coming up. Please join us.
